Why Avra
Avra echoes an old Aramaic phrase often translated as “I create as I speak.”
Every book begins as something a writer dared to say out loud: I have a story, and it deserves to exist. We named the press for the moment a vision becomes real, when the words leave the writer's head and land, finished, in a reader's hands. The gold line across our mark is that spoken word.
Our mission
Avra Press publishes literary fiction by writers from underrepresented communities, with special attention to Black and urban experience, first-generation lives, and the inheritances families pass down without naming. We believe the most necessary books are often the ones the market overlooks.
How we work

We publish a handful of books a year so each one gets real editing, design, and promotion.
